MY NAN MIXES BETTER THAN YOU – THE RESULT!
Sunday night saw the grand finale of The Interlude’s summer long DJ competition ‘My Nan Mixes Better Than You’ come to a thrilling conclusion.
Over the last 2 months 16 would be DJ’s battled it out for a spot in the final to be in with a chance of winning a phenomenal holiday for 2 to the white isle of Ibiza!
Contenders of all ages, experience and disciplines took to the decks behind our mighty Void Sound System to scratch, drop and strip their way to success?!The rules of the competition were simple. Each contestant would have 20 minutes to wow the crowd with their musical skills and prowess, judged only on crowd response.
Heat one saw Cutz, NicNak, NiallyCat and Kopeius sail through to the final on a sea of breakbeats and badass basslines. Joining them from July’s Heat we saw Sabras Radio host El Vishio, James Casey, Chezz1 & Shawdon (Semi Naked DJ’s) and Slanedogg rock the crowd for the last 4 spots in the final. As Sunday approached banter was in full force online as all the contestants prepared for the ultimate showdown to a packed and attentive audience. The lots were drawn and things started with a BIG bang as the semi naked DJ’s stripped down to thongs, and mixed and MC’d the crowd into a further.
The crowd went wild and launched the boys into a early front running for the top spot, but with only 1 down and 7 more to go, there was still plenty of room left for the other contestants to match their flow.
Up 2nd Sabras Radio host and hip-hop superstar El Vishio wowed the crowd with a brilliant selection of hip-hop from across the last decade, showing some of the younger talent what turntablism is all about, as he fades and cuts with all manor of body parts!
Holding it down for the female of the species, mud resident and all round bouncy gal NicNak mixed up a storm, opening her set in style with a cheeky Nero cut that seemed like an apt nod to the boys for also securing there first chart number 1 the very same day.
Following on from NicNak and fresh from his debut at the UK Relentless Boardmasters Festival the night before, local dubstep don, Kopeius brought the bass cannon in full force as he took the competition up a notch with own blend of dark and dutty dubstep.
Over halfway through the competition now and things are really starting to heat up as Leicester legend and Formation Records resident DJ Cutz steps up to the plate. Mixing with ferocious tenacity the dancefloor was set a blaze as tune after tune was loaded and dropped with lethal drum and bass devastation.
Coming into the final straight of the competition now, heat 2 titan and mix master James Casey takes to the booth with an almost timeless selection of tried and tested club classics to keep the crowd moving in time to his beat.
Last but by no means least, our final set of the evening comes from Wellgosh’s very own NiallyCat who takes the crowd back on down through the BPM ranges with a smooth and soulful blend of modern RNB, hip-hop and garage anthems
As the dust settled from the final set of the night, the 3 judges gathered to deliberate the reactions and outcome of the evening…..
